News from the Federation of General Workers Myanmar (FGWM)
The Federation of General Workers Myanmar (FGWM) shares the following updates:
- Myanmar industrial workers, especially garment workers are in the front line against military dictatorship in Myanmar since the start of the coup and until now. They are still participating in every possible way in the struggle against the military junta, such as participating in flash mob strikes, online campaigns and funding the resistance forces.
- The majority of garment workers are women. At the workplace, they face the violation of labour rights on various levels; e.g forced overtime without compensation, higher production targets demanded by bosses, pressure on permanent workers to resign and be employed again as daily wage workers. Recently a new trend can be observed: owners close their factories, re-open them again with another name, and re-hire workers as daily wage workers. Factory owners want to get rid of permanent workers to avoid having to pay legal entitlements. This is one way of how factory owners worsen working conditions and the life of workers in Myanmar. Due to the social and economic hardships, and lack of employment opportunities, an increase in child labour can be observed in the garment sector.
- In the past two years the world was able to witness the brutality of the military towards the people in Mynamar. Thousands of civilians were killed and villages attacked. Many of which burnt down during air strikes.
- The Federation of General Workers Myanmar (FGWM) and Myanmar Labour Alliance (MLA), together with over 200 other civil society organizations, keep calling for the support of comprehensive economic sanctions on Myanmar. This is the only way to stop flow of money to the Myanmar military.
- Brands are taking advantage of the political instability. In factories producing for major brands such as H&M, Lindex and Mark Apparel, workers are being attacked by supervisors, for example with a hot iron. These violent acts are part of a structural problem. They aim to put workers unter pressure to finish production targets. There are no mechanisms in place to prevent this kind of power abuse.

Bangladesh: Garment Workers call for international support! (minimum wage movement)
An alliance of 11 federations and unions in the garment sector of Bangladesh joined the Garment Workers’ Trade Union Center (GWTUC) in their call to fight for an increase in minimum wages to 25 000 BDT (approx. 215โฌ / 235US$) per month. That might not sound like much. But considering that the current minimum wage for garment workers in the country is a meager 8 000 BDT, an increase of more than 200% would be a real mile stone for the four million workers in that industry. The vast majority of which are female workers.
In Bangladesh you can find aroud 4000 garment factories, most of which produce for brands like Adidas, H&M, Nike, Marc O’Polo and Zara.
The GWTUC calls on fellow unions and individuals to stand in solidarity with the garment workers. See the call below.
GWTUC has been involved with the Global May Day network in the past few years and also supports the call for Global May Day 2023.

Coordinating #GlobalMayDay2023 – open meeting: April 23rd
We are in the final stages of coordinating Global May Day 2023. A call to action was finalized, a poster design is ready and many unions already confirmed to link their May Day activities with the call. To update each other and continue discussions on common coordinations during the week of action (April 26th – May 3rd), all identifying with the Global May Day self-conception are invited to participate in the next meeting on April 23rd.

Coordinating #GlobalMayDay2023 – open meeting April 16th
We are in the final stages of coordinating Global May Day 2023. A call to action was finalized, a poster design is ready and many unions already confirmed to link their May Day activities with the call. To update each other and continue discussions on common coordinations during the week of action (April 26th – May 3rd), all identifying with the Global May Day self-conception are invited to participate in the next meeting on April 16th.

Syndiquez la lutte !
Les classes populaires du monde entier sont confrontรฉes ร une spirale nรฉgative continue de pauvretรฉ et d’endettement รฉcrasant. Dans certaines rรฉgions, la colรจre et la rage croissantes alimentent les grรจves, les protestations et les actions industrielles sur le lieu de travail. Les travailleur.euses remettent en question le discours erronรฉ selon lequel nous sommes impuissants ร dรฉterminer notre avenir.
L’augmentation des prix de l’รฉnergie et des denrรฉes alimentaires frappe durement de nombreux foyers, en particulier les travailleur.euses ร bas salaires. Les personnes qui vivent dรฉjร au niveau du seuil de pauvretรฉ ou en dessous. Pour beaucoup, le seul choix possible est de se chauffer ou de manger, alors que les difficultรฉs รฉconomiques s’intensifient.
Les gouvernements qui se succรจdent dans le monde entier continuent de travailler contre les intรฉrรชts de notre classe. Les hommes d’affaires, les propriรฉtaires terriens, les propriรฉtaires d’usines et les investisseurs -en tant que membres de la classe dirigeante, veillent ร protรฉger leur pouvoir et leurs richesses aux dรฉpens des travailleur.euses et de l’environnement. L’idรฉologie de la croissance รฉconomique continue dicte tout.
Les miettes qu’ils nous jettent lorsqu’ils sont au pied du mur en raison d’une contre-pression organisรฉe, sont donnรฉes pour nous faire taire et nous dรฉtourner du vรฉritable ennemi : le systรจme capitaliste. Il nous rend malades et maintient de nombreuses personnes dans la pauvretรฉ, tandis que les prisons se multiplient et que l’on attend de nous que nous payions et combattions pour les guerres impรฉrialistes.
L’introduction de lois visant ร restreindre les protestations et ร rรฉduire les droits des travailleur.euses, obtenus de haute lutte sur les lieux de travail, est destinรฉe ร faire dรฉrailler toute lutte efficace de la classe ouvriรจre.
Notre colรจre ne doit pas รชtre dรฉtournรฉe vers des impasses qui cherchent ร remplacer une sรฉrie de marionnettes par une autre, ni vers des rรฉformes du systรจme qui cherchent ร rรฉpรฉter les mรชmes mรฉthodes qui ont รฉchouรฉ par le passรฉ. Pour nous, il ne peut y avoir de cessez-le-feu dans la guerre des classes.
Notre objectif est l’abolition du systรจme salarial et du capitalisme lui-mรชme. Nous luttons pour la crรฉation d’un monde organisรฉ par et pour notre classe, un monde qui fonctionne en harmonie avec la terre.
Nous n’avons pas l’intention de nous contenter de perturber, nous cherchons ร vaincre.
Nous sommes convaincus que ce qu’il faut maintenant, c’est crรฉer une rรฉsistance organisรฉe sur le lieu de travail et dans les communautรฉs, en renforรงant la solidaritรฉ au niveau local et mondial afin d’atteindre efficacement nos objectifs ร court et ร long terme.
Nous construisons activement une rรฉsistance de base dans nos syndicats, sur le lieu de travail, sur les piquets de grรจve et dans les rues -en premiรจre ligne, lร oรน les travailleur.euses se mobilisent.
Partout dans le monde, nous, rรฉvolutionnaires, syndicalistes et travailleur.euses, devrions organiser la lutte au sein de nos syndicats respectifs en toute solidaritรฉ, en utilisant des tactiques รฉprouvรฉes telles que l’entraide, l’action directe et l’auto-organisation.

La classe treballadora de tot el mรณn s’enfronta a una espiral negativa contรญnua de pobresa i deute paralitzant. En algunes regions, lโodi i la rร bia creixents alimenta les vagues, les protestes i les accions industrials al lloc de treball. Els/les treballadors/es estan desafiant la falsa narrativa que no podem determinar el nostre futur.
L’augment dels preus de l’energia i els aliments estร afectant durament a moltes llars, especialment treballadors/es amb salaris baixos. Persones que ja viuen dins o per sota del llindar de pobresa. Per a moltes, a mesura que les dificultats econรฒmiques s’intensifiquen, l’รบnica opciรณ รฉs entre escalfar-se i menjar.
Els successius governs arreu del mรณn continuen treballant en contra dels interessos de la nostra classe. Els empresaris, terratinents, propietaris de fร briques i inversors, com a part de la classe dirigent, asseguren que el seu propi poder i la seva riquesa estiguin protegits a costa de de la classe treballadora i el medi ambient. La ideologia del creixement econรฒmic continu ho dicta tot.
Les molles que ens llencen quan tenen l’esquena contra la paret per contrapressiรณ organitzada, ens les donen per silenciar i distreure’ns de l’enemic real: el sistema capitalista, el qual ens emmalalteix i ens mantรฉ en la pobresa, mentre les presons s’inflen i s’espera que paguem i lluitem en les guerres imperialistes.
La introducciรณ de lleis per restringir les protestes i reduir els drets dels treballadors/es pels quals es va lluitar durament a travรฉs d’innombrables lluites laborals, estร dissenyada per descarrilar qualsevol lluita efectiva de la classe treballadora.
La nostra rร bia no s’ha de desviar per carrerons sense sortida que pretenen reemplaรงar un conjunt de titelles per un altre, ni amb cap reforma del sistema que pretengui repetir els mateixos mรจtodes fallits que abans. Per a nosaltres, no hi pot haver un alto el foc en la guerra de classes.
El nostre objectiu รฉs l’aboliciรณ del sistema salarial i del propi capitalisme. Lluitem per la creaciรณ d’un mรณn organitzat per i per a la nostra classe, un mรณn que funcioni en harmonia amb la terra.
No pretenem simplement interrompre; sinรณ vรจncer.
Estem convenรงudes que el que es requereix ara รฉs la creaciรณ d’un lloc de treball organitzat i de resistรจncia comunitร ria, augmentant la solidaritat local i global per assolir amb eficร cia els nostres objectius tant a curt com a llarg termini.
Construir activament la resistรจncia de base als nostres sindicats, al lloc de treball, als piquets i als carrers; a les primeres lรญnies on es mobilitzen els/les treballadors/es.
A tot el mรณn, els revolucionaris, sindicalistes i treballadores hem d’organitzar la lluita dins dels respectius sindicats de manera solidร ria, utilitzant tร ctiques provades com les de l’ajuda mรบtua, l’acciรณ directa i l’autoorganitzaciรณ.

Sindicalizar la lucha!
La clase trabajadora en todo el mundo continรบa enfrentada a una continua espiral negativa de pobreza y deuda paralizante. En algunas regiones, el odio y la rabia alimentan huelgas, protestas y acciones industriales en el lugar de trabajo. L@s trabajador@s estรกn desafiando la falsa narrativa de que somos impotentes para determinar nuestro futuro.
El aumento de los precios de la energรญa y los alimentos, golpeรณ duramente a muchos hogares, en particular a los trabajadores con salarios bajos. Personas que ya viven en, o por debajo de la lรญnea de pobreza. Para much@s, a medida que se intensifican las dificultades econรณmicas, la รบnica opciรณn queda entre poderse calentar y comer.
Los sucesivos gobiernos en todo el mundo siguen obrando en contra de los intereses de nuestra clase. Los empresarios, terratenientes, dueรฑos de fรกbricas e inversores, como parte de la clase dominante, se aseguran de que su propio poder y riqueza estรฉn protegidos a expensas de la clase trabajadora y el medio ambiente. La ideologรญa del continuo crecimiento econรณmico lo dicta todo.
Las migajas que nos tiran cuando tienen la espalda contra la pared por la contra-presiรณn organizada, son para silenciarnos y distraernos del verdadero enemigo: el sistema capitalista, el cual nos enferma y mantiene en la pobreza, mientras las prisiones se inflan, y esperan que paguemos y luchemos en guerras imperialistas.
La introducciรณn de leyes para restringir las protestas y reducir los derechos de l@s trabajador@s por los que se luchรณ duramente a travรฉs de innumerables luchas en el lugar de trabajo, estรก diseรฑada para descarrilar cualquier lucha efectiva de la clase trabajadora.
Nuestra rabia no debe desviarse hacia callejones sin salida que buscan reemplazar un juego de tรญteres con otro, ni con ninguna reforma del sistema que busque repetir los mismos mรฉtodos fallidos de antes. Para nosotr@s, no puede haber un alto al fuego en la guerra de clases.
Nuestro objetivo es la aboliciรณn del sistema salarial y del propio capitalismo. Luchamos por la creaciรณn de un mundo organizado por y para nuestra clase, que funcione en armonรญa con la tierra.
No pretendemos simplemente interrumpir; sino vencer.
Estamos convencid@s de que lo que se requiere ahora es la creaciรณn de resistencia organizada en el lugar de trabajo y en la comunidad, aumentando la solidaridad a nivel local y global para lograr de manera efectiva nuestros objetivos tanto a corto como a largo plazo.
Construyendo activamente la resistencia de base en nuestros sindicatos, en el lugar de trabajo, en los piquetes y en las calles; en la lรญnea del frente donde los trabajadores se estรกn movilizando.
En todo el mundo, l@s revolucionari@s, sindicalistas y trabajador@s debemos organizar la lucha dentro de los respectivos sindicatos en solidaridad, utilizando tรกcticas probadas como las de ayuda mutua, acciรณn directa y auto-organizaciรณn.
