The Blood Money Campaign was initiated and designed by activists and union leaders on the ground in Myanmar. The BMC team is comprised of activists with different backgrounds: for example labor and student unions, civic engagement, peace and education activists, youth, people with disabilities as well as people in research, IT and design.
Among others the Federation of General Workers Myanmar (FGWM) is involved, which consists of grassroot factory unions across the country – mostly in textile factories. The campaign aims to pressure companies that keep doing business with the military junta – be it directly or indirectly.
The BMC initiators decided to put the focus especially on the oil and gas industry in October 2021. They call for targetted sanctions of the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE), which would impact corporations like TotalEnergies, Chevron, Petronas, PTTEP and POSCO.
With any business done the military and its repressive regime benefits – through taxes, fees or direct cooperations.

Currently various external actors – mostly other grassroot labour unions as well as people born in Myanmar and living in exile – are involved. Among them is the International Confederation of Labour (ICL) as well as unions connected with the Global May Day network. The campaign can be seen as a continuation of the Call for International CDM Solidarity published in April.

Blood Money Campaign, together with the General Strike Committee of Nationalities (GSCN) and the Sitt Nyein Pann Foundation, released an open letter calling on the G7 to start acting!

We urge the G7 governments and ministers to:
1) Formally recognize that the junta has no legitimacy and no control over large parts of Myanmar – it is a criminal gang and is not and will not be the government of Myanmar – do not engage with it diplomatically, expel its military attaches, do not invite its representatives to or attend international governmental meetings to which it is invited.
2) Formally recognize the National Unity Government (NUG) which has been accepted by the people of Myanmar as our legitimate government and support its efforts to hold the criminal junta to account in international courts.
3) Provide weapons and other support to democratic forces resisting the junta.
4) Cut off all revenue streams to the junta, including by enforcing existing sanctions and enacting sanctions on the Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) and Myanma Foreign Trade Bank (MFTB), so that it cannot finance its war against the Myanmar people.
5) Ensure that the junta has no access to or role in the distribution of humanitarian aid. Aid must instead be delivered through civil society organizations, the National Unity Government and Ethnic Revolutionary Organizations.
6) Sanction aviation fuel and enact an arms embargo on the junta.
Inaction by the UN Security Council, or even the inability of G7 nations to act together, should not deter states from acting unilaterally. A failure to act is a form of complicity.
