Global Month of Solidarity: Pickets at Lidl stores in Ireland

August 15th, August 23rd, and now on August 29th workers organized with the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) in Ireland picketed in front of Lidl stores in different cities in support of fellow workers struggling for their full wages and compensations in Dhaka.

As part of a month of action called by the International Confederation of Labour (ICL – CIT) in solidarity with 6000 sacked garment workers, members of the IWW continue to hold information pickets at Lidl Stores in Ireland. The action is seen as an international effort to help raise awareness with the public, of the ongoing struggle by garment workers in Bangladesh, represented by members of the Garment Workers Trade Union Centre (GWTUC).

This weekend the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) have once again held public information pickets outside Lidl stores in both Belfast and Derry. To date, information pickets have been placed outside Lidl stores both and south of the country to help highlight the ongoing struggle by GWTUC members to ensure they are not isolate or forgotten.

Global Month of Solidarity: Rally in Hamburg at Mercado (NewYorker)

On July 3rd comrades of the Free Workers’ Union (FAU) Hamburg rallied in front of the New Yorker store in the city center for the first time. For the second rally on August 15th, a local alliance was formed consisting of FAU Hamburg, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) Hamburg, the Libertarians H-Burg as well as some individual comrades. This one took place in front of a Lidl store in Harburg (Hamburg). And today a third picket took place. This time in front of the shopping center Mercado in Altona (Hamburg). Inside is another New Yorker store.

Music as well as audio messages were played. Hundreds of leaflets distributed. This time passers-by had the opportunity to deliver a message directly to the textiles workers still struggling for their full wages as well as compensation payments at Dragon Sweater. A small mobile screen was build, which displayed “From Hamburg to Dhaka: In Solidarity with the Workers at Dragon Sweater! #UnitedAgainstTheDragon” in Bangla. People were able to write down their personal message and pictures were taken with those messages in front of the mobile screen.
Also a pamphlet was once again handed over to the store management asking them to forward the information on the rally to their headquarters in Braunschweig.

All in all a successful action which generated more publicity on the struggle of the textile workers at Dragon Sweater to the disadvantage of NewYorker (and Lidl).

Global Month of Solidarity: Press Release by GWTUC

Dragon Group must immediately compensate the workers with their owed wages, service benefits, and provident fund amounts.

Today, the workers of Dragon Group’s factories, Dragon Sweater and Imperial Sweater held a press conference to announce their plans to press home their demands for their owed wages, service benefits and provident fund amounts. The two factories are more than 25 years old and during this duration the owners have deprived almost 6,000 workers, some of whom have been working for over two decades, of their legally owed benefits.

The owners have exploited the instability of the COVID 19 Pandemic to terminate the experienced workers without their legally owed benefits. Even as the government set aside funds for the payment of workers’ wages, the Dragon owners have only paid 65% of the wages for April, May and June. The politically influential owner and ex-president of the BGMEA, the conglomerate of garment owners in Bangladesh, Golam Mustafa Quddus has used the disruption and suffering of the Pandemic to terminate the workers illegally without any legal repercussions.

The workers have been demonstrating for the past few months. They have held protests in front of the factory and laid siege to the Labor Ministry. Even as the government sponsored Crisis Management Committee have invited the workers and owners for meetings, on each occasion the government has refused to hold the owners accountable for the non-payment of workers’ benefits.

With this mind, we hereby are announcing our next course of action. From 31st August, we will begin our ‘Occupation of the Labor Ministry.’ In this continuous demonstration, we hope and expect that conscientious working class people will express their solidarity with our demands. Alongside the occupation, we further have plans to lay siege to the Prime Ministers’ Office, The BGMEA Office and the residence of the owners of Dragon Group in support of our demands.

Global Month of Solidarity: Workers in Dhaka say “Thanks!”

Workers organized with the Garment Workers’ Trade Union Center (GWTUC) in Dhaka expressed their gratitude towards the workers and unions in other parts of the world who stand in solidarity with them.

Today, the protesting Dragon Sweater garment workers held a meeting to decide on the next steps for their ongoing movement for the payment of their wages and benefits. They also demonstrated their solidarity with the labor unions and organizations of the Global May Day initiative who have been tirelessly demonstrating in support in Ireland, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and other areas. The workers in Bangladesh are immensely thankful to all their friends abroad who have played their role in holding global brands and garment owners accountable.

Global Month of Solidarity: Pickets at Lidl in Ireland and Scotland

Members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) in Ireland rallied for the second time at Lidl stores in different cities, such as Belfast and Derry.

This time comrades in Glasgow (Scotland) joined the coordinated action with a picket outside the city’s Lidl Store based in Govanhill’s Victoria Road.

The IWW Ireland published this report:

Solidarity pickets continues this week as members of the Industrial Workers of the World Ireland Branch take part in a series of month long international solidarity protests in support of Garment Workers in Bangladesh.

In Belfast and Derry this weekend IWW members held pickets out an number of Lidl stores at the Hi Park Centre and on the Buncranna Road stores as part of ongoing efforts to highlight how 6000 illegally sacked Garment Workers continue to have their wages withheld.

A member of the IWW spoke during todays action on Belfasts High Street stating: “Our union has taken part in a series of international actions in an effort to draw attention to the fact that 6000 members of the Garment Workers Trade Union Centre (GWTUC) were illegally sacked in March and have still not been paid by Dragon Sweater Group.

“We have organised a series of high profile solidarity actions against major supermarket chains such as Lidl and Walmart/ASDA globally who have directly profited from the cheap labour of Garment Workers for years.

“These stores have been and continue to be supplied by garments made by Dragon Sweater Group. Back in March this company, cruelly and illegally terminated over 6000 garment workers positions and refused to pay wages owed to them.”

A representative of the GWTUC stated that “Wages and benefits have gone unpaid to workers, majority of whom have worked for at least five years, some of whom have been employed at the factory for the better part of two decades.

“Dragon Group targeted those workers who have accrued a lot of unpaid benefits and wages. It is a widespread practice in the Bangladesh Garment Industry to leave years upon years of workers’ wages and benefits unpaid, and eventually the owners terminate the workers, bring in a new batch and start the whole process again. So, it is safe to say, that a lot of these brands have benefited from unpaid labor over a number of years.”

Following today’s action a member of the IWW Derry Branch told us that: “By holding a month long series of rolling solidarity pickets, we are demanding that both Lidl and Walmart/ASDA urgently revoke their suppliers contracts from the Dragon Sweater Group to help ensure that ALL workers receive their full wages and payments owed to them, and that their all their suppliers fully adhere to labour rights.

“In doing so, we call upon both of these multinationals to equally ensure that their supply chain is transparent in order to stop the exploitation of workers which is the wish of all their customer’s, here in Ireland and throughout Europe.

“We will continue our solidarity with the GWTUC and others through the CIT-ICL, in an effort to highlight what the Dragon Sweater Group are doing. We demand the reinstatement of all 6000 garment workers and for wages owed to them to be paid in full. We would encourage other unions to come forward and add their voices to the international call.”

As part of today’s solidarity actions, members of Clydeside IWW Branch in Scotland, held a picket in Glasgow’s Southside in support of sacked Dragon Group workers in Dhaka. They held a picket outside the city’s Lidl Store based in Govanhill’s Victoria Road.

Aug. 29th, 2020: Day of Action @ NewYorker stores everywhere

Until last year the New Yorker Group Services International GmbH & Co.KG (New Yorker) received vast amounts of clothings from the Dragon Sweater factory – produced by the workers who were fired just a few months later. They did not get their full wages nor compensations paid and keep fighting to get what is owed to them.

As part of the Global Month of Solidarity with Garment Workers at Dragon Sweater in Dhaka (Bangladesh) a day of action was initiated to put the focus especially on New Yorker.

New Yorker stores can be found in different parts of the world, most of which are in and around Europe. Their headquarter is located in Braunschweig (Germany). You can check here, if there is a store in your region. Consider to organize an action and let us know [asia@icl-cit.org], if you do.

Together we can put pressure on New Yorker to publicly blacklist the Dragon Group!

So far confirmed for that day are rallies in Hamburg and Bonn.
Those materials and audio messages might help in arranging an activity.

Global Month of Solidarity: From Yangon to Dhaka

The Federation of Garment Workers Myanmar (FGWM) expresses its solidarity with the garment workers at Dragon Sweater as part of the Global Month of Solidarity.

FGWM unites unions of 20 factories. The main struggle they are facing is union busting by targeted reduction of union members and leaders using CoViD-19 as a pretext, similar to developments at Dragon Sweater in Dhaka. Unions at four factories are currently involved in direct fights with the owners. Two are in the garment sector and another two are involved in lens and electronic materials production.

On August 16th workers of various factories took pictures in front of the FGWM union house located in Yangon.
